Do you need an apostille on your Divorce Decree?

In order to prove that you are divorced in the USA and free to marry in another country, you will need to obtain an apostille on your certified divorce decree. A divorce decree is the court’s final ruling and judgment order that makes the termination of a marriage official.

In order to apostille your divorce decree, you will need to contact the Court and obtain a certified copy. A certified copy will include the seal, signature, and the name of the Clerk who is attesting that the copy is a real certified copy. We recommend requesting the certified divorce decree to be signed by a supervisor or manager to prevent delays at the state office.
Typically, a certified copy of your divorce decree will be stapled by the court. If you don’t have a copy, you can contact the Court or hire a service that can obtain a certified copy. You can also ask your former attorney to obtain a certified copy. Most of the time, a copy provided by your attorney will not be a certified copy. Remember, a certified copy will include the seal, signature, and the name of the Clerk who is attesting that the copy is a real certified copy.
Obtaining an apostille on your certified divorce decree can be complicated and time consuming.
