How to Apostille a Driving Record

Do you need to apostille your driving record?

Are you planning to drive in another country and they are requesting an apostille on your driving record?  Do you also need an apostille on your driver license?

In order to trade in your license for an international driver license, you will need to apostille your driving record and/or your driver license.

In order to apostille your driving record, it must be signed by the issuer and notarized.  For example, if your driving record is from California, you will need to contact the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) and request the record to be signed by a representative of the DMV and notarized.

Some states may issue driving records that already have an official signature and may not need notarization. Be sure to order a certified copy online or directly from the Department of Motor Vehicle. For example, in New York, a driving record is signed by the acting Commissioner and does not require notarization.

Step 1: Call your local DMV for information on how you can obtain a notarized copy of your driving record.  If they are unable to provide you a notarized copy, please ask for a signed copy from a DMV representative.

Apostilles can be complicated. Don’t leave this process to untrained employees or non-professionals who do not fully understand the Apostille process and the unique requirements of certain countries. Your paperwork could be rejected costing you time and money. Don’t let this happen to you!
