Marriage License Apostille

Do you need to apostille a marriage license?

At USA Apostille, Inc., we take the guesswork out of obtaining an apostille on your marriage license.  We can apostille marriage licenses issued from all 50 States and the District of Columbia (Washington DC).

The most popular states we can apostille marriage licenses are from CaliforniaNevadaTexasFloridaNew York, and Illinois.

In order to apostille your license, you must mail in the original or a certified copy issued by the County Clerk or State Registrar to our office for processing.  Marriage certificates can only be authenticated from the State of issue.  The Secretary of State does not have the authority to authenticate documents issued from another State. For example, if your marriage certificate is from the State of Texas, the State of Texas is the only State that can issue the Texas apostille.  Another example is if your marriage certificate is from New York, only the State of New York can issue the apostille.

Not every marriage certificate can qualify for an apostille.  Some States have set time limits on how old a certificate can be.  For example, marriage certificates issued from the State of Virginia must be issued within the past 12 months. We recommend that you mail in the certificate you currently have for review.  If the State rejects your document, we will contact you with instructions.

Common reasons why another country would request an apostille on a marriage license are:

– Dual Citizenship
– Death of Spouse
– Interest & Ownership in Property
– Inheritance
– Moving to Another Country
– Working in Another Country

Note: Some countries will demand that you prove you are legally married if you intent to stay in their country for a specific length of time.  These countries include Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Pakistan, and the UAE.

If you are outside of the US, please mail in your marriage certificate with our order forms for processing.  Please call or email our office so we can email you the instructions, cost, and processing time.

Passport Apostille

Do you need to apostille a Passport?

Obtaining an apostille on a notarized color copy of your passport is easy!  Please follow the three simple steps…

  • Step 1: Make a color copy of your passport and meet with a local notary public.
  • Step 2: Sign the color copy and have the notary notarize your signature on the document.  The notary will sign, stamp, and add the proper notarial wording.
  • Step 3: Mail in your original notarized document and our completed order forms for processing.  Please do not mail in the original passport.

We can apostille a color copy of any notarized passport including passports from India, UK, Mexico, Switzerland, Argentina, Netherlands, and China.  If you have a passport, we can apostille it!

For most countries, they will only request the color copy of the page with your picture and information to be signed and notarized.  Some countries may request for you to color copy the entire passport (all pages) and only have the page with your picture and information to be signed and notarized.  Please double check with the requesting country in order to avoid any delays or additional costs.

Note: Please do not mail in the original passport.  We do not provide notary services.

In order to apostille your Passport, you must mail in the original notarized color copy to our office for processing.  In California, we have offices in Los Angeles/Burbank and San Francisco.  If you are outside of the USA, we recommend that you contact the local U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate office to schedule a time to meet with a U.S. Federal notary to notarize the color copy.  If you do go to a US Embassy or US Consulate in a foreign country to notarize the color copy, you can then mail in the notarized color copy to our Washington DC apostille office for processing.

If you are in the United States and in the state of California we recommend that you find a notary public who has at least five years of experience and one who will follow the notarial laws of their State. Apostille US Driver’s License for Portugal

Do you need to apostille your US driver’s license or abstract of driving record for Portugal?

Do you need to exchange your US Driver’s license for a Portugal Driver’s License?

U.S. Citizens are entitled to drive in Portugal with their U.S. issued driver’s license for a period no to exceed 185 days, provided they are not legal residents.  After acquiring legal residency, U.S. citizens have 90 days in which to request the exchange of the driver’s license without being required to take a driving test. During that period, U.S. citizens may continue to drive with their driver’s license.

After exhausting the 90 days without making the request, U.S. citizens will not be allowed to continue driving, but they will be allowed to request the exchange without being subject to completion of driving test. They have a deadline of two years counting from the date of acquiring residency to make the request.

U.S. citizens need to present the following document issued in the USA to the local authorities in Portugal:

An abstract of driving record from the issuing authority in the last state of residence in the United States.   The DMV must attest the authenticity of the driving license, date of issue and expiration date, class of vehicles that you may drive and any suspension and revocation.   What is an apostille?

Before getting started, please find out if a color copy of your driver’s license signed, notarized, and apostilled is sufficient.  If not, then you will need to contact the DMV for a signed abstract of driving record.  An official copy with a valid signature must be provided by the DMV in which the official who signed the document can be authenticated by the Secretary of State’s office.  If no signature is provided or verifiable at the state office, then the only other choice is to have a notary public can visit the DMV to notarize the official who is going to sign/attest to the driving record.

NOTE: The information above is subject to change without notice and should not be construed as legal advice.

Apostille for India

Do you need to apostille your documents for India?

The most common documents we can apostille for India are affidavits, power of attorney, bank statements, salary statements, utility bills, driver’s license, and passports.  These type of documents must be signed and notarized before they can receive an apostille.

Note: Vital record documents (birth, marriage, death, etc…) are not notarized and must be a certified copy issued by the County Clerk or State Registrar.

We can apostille documents signed and notarized in all 50 States and the District of Columbia. Once you receive your documents back with the apostille, you will then need to contact the Consulate General of India for further instructions.

A power of attorney needs to be signed and witnessed by two individuals (with their names and addresses clearly mentioned).   Please visit the Consulate General of India website for instructions on how to create this document or have one created professionally for you from India.

In many places in India, they would easily recognize the attestation by the Indian Embassy/Consulate office and hence may ask for attested copy despite the document receiving the apostille from the Secretary of State’s office.  Hence, to avoid any inconvenience, please have your power of attorney apostilled and then attested by the Embassy or Consulate office.

The country of India has one Embassy in Washington DC and five Consulate General offices in the United States.  The Consulate General offices of India are located in the following States:

  • California (San Francisco)
  • Texas (Houston)
  • New York (NYC)
  • Chicago (Illinois)
  • Georgia (Atlanta)

Please contact the Embassy or Consulate office for instructions before you begin to process your document. You may be asked to notarize additional documentation to show proof that you are currently a U.S. resident. Common documents they will ask are:

  • U.S Driving license
  • Water or landline telephone bill displaying applicant’s address
  • House Lease Agreement
  • Bank/credit card/mobile phone/utility bill statements

Are you planning to open a bank account in another country and they have asked you to apostille your passport?  Have you been asked to confirm your identity in a foreign country?  Are you planning to purchase a home or deal with an inheritance?  Are you planning to do business in a foreign country?

We can apostille all international and US passports for countries who are members of the Hague Apostille Convention and for countries who are not (AKA: Legalization process).

How does my passport get an apostille?

Note: If you are in a foreign country, you will need to visit the local US Embassy or US Consulate office.  Please contact us if you are in a foreign country for instructions.

If you are physically in the U.S., please follow the three simple steps below.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email us Monday – Saturday from 8am to 7pm.

Step 1: Make a color copy of your passport.  Typically, this is the page with your picture and information.  Some countries may request that you color copy all of the pages.

Step 2: Meet with a local notary public.  You can find a notary public near you by searching online “Notary Near Me”.  Also, most UPS stores have a notary public on staff.

Step 3: Sign and notarize your document.  You will be attesting to the color copy of your passport. You can write the following statement, “I certify this is a true copy of my US passport #ABCD1234”.  Please sign under your statement and date it.  The notary will then sign, date, stamp and add the proper notarial wording for their state.  Please be sure your signature matches the signature on the passport.
