Do you need to apostille a birth certificate?

A birth certificate issued from any of the 50 US States must be apostilled from the State that issued the certificate.  The certificate must either be issued from the Health Department, County Clerk, or the State Registrar.  The certificate must bear the official signature of the official who is authorized to sign it. In order to obtain the Hague Apostille for this certificate, it must be mailed in to our office for processing.

For example, if you were born in New York City, your New York birth certificate must be apostilled from the State of New York.  The same holds true for a California birth certificate.  A birth certificate issued from the State of California can only be apostilled from the California State office.

WARNING: If an apostille company offers to apostille a birth certificate in a state other than the one it was issued from, then the apostille is considered invalid (Basically fraud).  For example, if your California birth certificate was issued with a New York apostille, this apostille is invalid and fraudulent.  A notary cannot copy certify a vital record certificate (Birth, Death, Marriage) and process it through another State.  Example: The State of New York cannot apostille a signature of a California official who signed your California birth certificate.  We recommend that you work with a reputable apostille service company who will obtain the apostille from the State that the certificate was issued from.
