Apostille Birth Certificate

Birth Certificate ApostilleDo you need an apostille on your birth certificate?

There are many reasons why another country would request an apostille on your birth certificate.  If you are planning to get married in another country or obtain dual citizenship, you will be asked to obtain an apostille on your documents.  We recommend that you find out what documents are being requested from you in order to avoid any delays or additional costs.

For example, if the country is also requesting an apostille on your FBI background check, you will first need to contact an FBI approved channeler who will obtain the background check and mail it to your address for processing.

Additional reasons why another country would request an apostille on your birth certificate are:

– Death of Spouse
– Interest & Ownership in Property
– Inheritance
– Working in Another Country

Birth certificates must be processed from the State that issued them.  For example, if you were born in New York and are requesting an apostille, only the State of New York can apostille this document.  The same holds true for all 50 States and the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.)  If you are U.S. Citizen born abroad, please call the U.S. Department of State for assistance.  If you do not have your certificates, you can order online through Vitalcheck.com.

The requirements for obtaining an apostille on a birth certificate can vary from State to State.  For example, birth certificates issued from the States of Virginia and Wisconsin cannot be older than 12 months.  The State of Florida will only process a birth certificate issued by the Florida Department of State.  In California, a birth certificate can be apostilled if it’s issued by the County Clerk or State Registrar.
