In the State of California, we have offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles.  Our office in San Francisco is located in the Downtown area and our office in Los Angeles is located in the Burbank area.  Documents issued from the State of California can be apostilled through any one of our two California offices.

The processing time at our San Francisco office is the next business day and the same-day at our Los Angeles office.  We also provide FedEx return shipping at no additional cost to any address in the United States.

The State of California has 58 distinct Counties with each County issuing birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, and single status affidavits.  The Superior Court of the County can issue your divorce decree and other legal documents.  If your documents require notarization, you can meet with any notary in California and have your documents notarized.   Keep in mind a notarized document is not the same as an apostille.  An apostille is issued by the California Secretary of State.

The first step is to contact our office so we can review your documents.  It’s important to have your documents available as we may ask questions regarding the signer of the document and the department the document has been issued from.  Though we will do our best to verify your documents over the phone, only the Secretary of State will make the final decision.  We recommend that you mail in the document you currently have for authentication.

The California Secretary of State has strict requirements for California birth and California death certificates.  Birth and death certificates issued by the Health Services Department require two steps for completion.  For example, a birth certificate issued by the Los Angeles Health Services Department and signed by a medical doctor requires Los Angeles County authentication before the State will attach the Apostille.  Please note that California has 58 counties.

Also, notarized documents in California must follow strict California notarial laws.  If your documents require notarization in California (Example: Power of Attorney Apostille), we recommend that you work with a notary who will follow the laws of the State.  If the notary makes a mistake, your documents will be rejected.

Apostille California

Apostille CaliforniaSince 2005, our office in California has been authenticating documents daily through the California Secretary of State’s office.  What makes our service unique, is that we can apostille your California documents the same-day and return them to you the next business morning by FedEx.

In California, not every document issued by the County Clerk or State will qualify for an apostille.  For example, documents issued by the Health Services Department do not qualify for an apostille because, the document is signed by a Medical Doctor.  In order to apostille these type of documents, we will need to have them first certified by the County Clerk.  This extra step called an “Exemplification”.  You can also request a new certified copy by the County Clerk in order to avoid the exemplification process and cost.

California AB 60 Driver License Apostille

Assembly Bill (AB) 60 (Chapter 524: Statutes of 2013) requires the department to issue an original driver license to an applicant who is unable to submit satisfactory proof of legal presence in the United States. Driver license applicants under AB 60 must meet all other qualifications for licensure and must provide satisfactory proof of identity and California residency.

During the past month, we have received dozens of requests to have foreign documents certified by the California Secretary of State’s office.  Depending on the destination country, your document will either receive an Apostille or a certificate.  If your country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, then you will receive an Apostille.  If your country is not a member, then your document will receive a certificate.  Hague Apostille Member Countries

Please follow the 2 simple steps here:

Step 1: If your document is in another language other than English, you must have it translated to English.  You can find a certified translator by visiting the American Translators Association website located here: http://www.atanet.org/  or you can find a translator by searching the internet.  Please keep in mind your document must be translated and notarized in California.

Note: If your certificate is already in English, go ahead and meet with a local notary who will make a color copy of your certificate and attach a California Copy Certification by Document Custodian.  All notaries who are members of the National Notary Association (NNA) will have this form available and can also contact the NNA to obtain it.  You can also Contact Us and request that we email you this form.

Step 2: Mail the notarized document including our order form and credit card authorization form to our office for processing.  Please, do not mail-in the original birth certificate.
