During the past 12 months, we’ve noticed an increase in the number of requests for an apostille on an FBI background check for the country of Panama. Panama is now requiring a Federal FBI Criminal Background Check for purposes of obtaining a residency in Panama.
Note: The criminal background check record from the local police, Department of Justice (State Background Check), or Sheriff’s Department can no longer be used. You must first contact an FBI Channeler to help expedite the background check process. They will mail to your home or office the authentication letter printed on a special tamper resistant paper.
If you are considering relocating to Panama, the Panamanian government will request to have an apostille attached to your FBI Criminal Background Check prior to allowing you to permanently stay in their country.

The Government of Panama may also request your Social Security Administration (SSA) Income and benefits letter to be authenticated by the U.S. Federal Government. The purpose of authenticating this document is to prove to the Panamanian government that you will have sufficient income as long as you are alive and live there. This helps protect their government from unnecessary costs in having to financially support you if you personally run out of money.
The local Social Security Administration office can assist you in obtaining the Social Security Administration (SSA) Income and Benefits letter or you can download and print this letter from their website.
Please note that the FBI authentication letter will be processed through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.. The Social Security Income and Benefits letter will either be processed through the U.S. Department of State or the Secretary of the District of Colombia (Washington, D.C.).
